RSA National Employment Conference 2006:
Transition into High Demand Job Sectors

The 2006 National Employment Conference: “Transition into High Demand Job Sectors,” will bring business and industry leaders together with representatives of public vocational rehabilitation (VR) agencies and other stakeholders with an interest in the transition and employment of students and young adults with disabilities. Through interactive training and small group sessions, conferees will learn about and develop recommendations for effective strategies for achieving successful post-school outcomes for youth and young adults with disabilities. The focus of the strategies will be employment and careers in high-growth, high demand industries.

The conference will feature promising practices in job training, job development and job placement to access career opportunities in high- growth, high demand vital sectors of the American economy. High demand job sectors are those sectors that are (1) projected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy or (2) are existing or emerging businesses being transformed by technology and innovation that require new skill sets for workers. The following high-growth industries will be featured:

  • Hospitality and Service industries
  • Healthcare
  • Banking and Finance
  • Science and Technology

Expected Outcomes:

  • Identify and disseminate effective models and related information to provide young people with disabilities paths to career enhancing opportunities in high growth, high demand occupations.
  • Identify strategic partnerships between the public VR system, business and industry representatives, and education and training providers
  • Identify strategies to eliminate disincentives to serving students and young adults with disabilities and identify appropriate measure of success.
