Charles M. Schwab Architect has published a first of its kind home plans book titled: Universal Designed “Smart” Homes for the 21st Century. 102 home plans that can be ordered and built.
The home plans in this book are based on Universal Design Principles, are fully accessible and designed to work for people of all ages, sizes and abilities.
Smart features of these homes include instructions on how to receive an ENERGYSTAR label and many are designed for narrow lots. The home plans also specify optional sustainable building products, clean indoor air products, passive radon emissions details as well as engineered safe room plans, and included free with every home plan ordered.
FEMA has given us permission to include these construction drawings created by Texas Tech University with every home plan. Every home has an integral safe-room designed within. You may choose to include or to omit it. The accessible bathroom doubles up and is large enough for a usable safe-room.
This is the first Stock home plans book that combines Universal Design, Energy efficiency and Sustainable building practices as well as optional Safe- Rooms in every home plan.
30 of the home plans are less than 2000 square feet and are affordable designed in the New Urbanism style for narrow lots for urban infill as well as retirement housing communities.
We specify sustainable and low maintenance materials. The remaining homes are mostly less than 4000 square feet. Home types include in-law additions, empty nester, single family and duplexes. We also design custom homes that follow the same UD Smart guidelines. The book is Spiral Bound and lays flat for easy access.
The plan book also has an informative room-by-room description of features and benefits in the UD Smart home. This is a checklist and is included in an effort to be of use to advocates, agencies, builders and aging homeowners alike.
This resource will be of use for those making home modifications and Universal designed home additions. An extensive list of Universal Design and Sustainable building resources and book references is also included for further study.
